Hints : Positions and how to Find Them

Here some hints about finding a position in Japan, as a regular employee, a trainee, a student or a PhD.

The first hint we can give you is to contact our association, as we can provide more updated and accurate information than our site can. Contact the committee in order to get more information.

Selecting your host organisation

Remember: once you're in Japan, it's very hard to change your position.
But few of those who are willing to work in Japan can pay a visit to the different hosts before deciding where to go. That's also why having contact with someone who knows the situation is essential.
Also check the following and ask :
  • what will be the work you'll have to do.
  • equipment available
  • accommodation : very important as the japanese standards are very low : lots of trainees of big enterprises were in dormitories more than one hour away from work and city centre. See accommodation.
  • relocation allowance
  • holidays
  • salary
  • working hours (how much, flexible, ...)

Other hints

If the candidate cannot find a position directly in Japan, one can try to get hired by a foreign company that has a branch in Japan that is in expansion, and that would need the competencies of the candidate. But note that quite often the Japanese branches are simply customer/after sales support centres, where chances for engineers to get hired are low.
